Cepheid (CPHD) – Exception in a Recession?

CPHD price performance has caught my attention in recent days. The stock is up 17%-YTD while the overall financial market is in negative territory. The stock has a positive uptrend with substantial volume increase around $30.

CPHD is a molecular diagnostics company that develops manufactures, and markets fully-integrated systems for genetic analysis in the clinical, industrial and Bio-threat markets. The company’s main produce GeneXpert is picking up in sales volume. The GeneXpert detects infectious diseases that individuals may be exposed to in hospital. GeneXpert detects the infectious diseases faster than anyother product thats out on the market. Analysts are estimating strong sale and earnings growth in ’08 & ’09. I belief the stock will continue to increase in price despite a bear market. During bear markets healthcare stocks are defensive names. What more defensive can you get with a company that has introduce a new product to hospital that saves time, money and lives.
